Historian How Pre-63 Seniors Could Help

(EDITOR'S NOTE: To listen to John Turney, click on the following link: )Like the Halls board of selectors, NFL historian John Turney of supports the expansion of senior finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.At the moment, there is one per year through 2024. However, a majority of the boards 49 voters last month told Hall president Jim Porter theyd like that changed with Dylan Bundy Jersey an increase to two per annum suggested and Porter seemed receptive. In fact, he said he would take that me sage to Cantons board of directors, hoping it could implement the change as soon as 2023.Thats encouraging to Turney. But he went one step farther, proposing an idea that bears discu sion -- and that coincides with the Halls Cla s of 2023. The Pro Football Hall of Fame was founded in 1963, so next year marks its 60th anniversary. Then, asked Turney, why not make that a 60th anniversary a celebration of the Halls first year? How? Expand the list of senior finalists to more than one or two and make it available only to the best and brightest players super seniors, Turney called them who played their entire careers prior to 1963?Then, Turney said on the latest Eye Test for Two podcast ( ), we could get four, five, six or eight whatever they want to decide of the very most qualified of players that were pa sed over -- guys who werent just one time All-NFL or two-time; guys that were four, five or six-time All-NFL players that are just very clear choices. Now, lets be honest: Because the Hall inducted 10 seniors for the Centennial Cla s of 2020, I doubt it's interested in another ma s induction. But, at the very least, the idea deserves consideration. When the Centennial Cla s was formed, there was an a sumption that it would tilt heavily toward pre-1963 candidates left behind. That didnt happen. Of the 10 seniors elected to the Centennial Cla s, only four played their entire careers prior to 1963. And thats not Fred Lynn Jersey enough, Turney said.Scroll to ContinueSo who else deserves consideration? Turney cited a poll that asked that very question, and four runaway choices emerged. They are:--Former Green Bay end LaVern Dilweg. A three-time NFL champion and consensus All-Pro five straight seasons, Dilweg is one of only two members of the 1920s all-decade team not elected to Canton (Hunk Anderson is the other). But he was also a ferocious blocker and such a reliable tackler that Hall-of-Famer Red Grange named him as the greatest end who ever brought me down. When he retired in 1934, Dilweg was universally considered the greatest end in NFL history. Then Don Hutson followed him to Green Bay, and that was that. Dilweg was all but forgotten by voters.--Former Philadelphia offensive/defensive lineman Al Wistert. In nine NFL seasons, he was an eight-time All-Pro, two-time NFL champion and all-decade choice. You guys remember the arguments for (former Cleveland offensive lineman) Gene Hickerson, said Turney. Somebody had to be blocking for Jim Brown. Well, the same applies to Al Wistert. The NFLs leading rusher of all time when he retired was Steve Van Buren. Well, somebody had to be blocking for him. Why hasnt that argument applied to Al Wistert?--Former Detroit offensive/defensive lineman Ox Emerson. A six-time All-Pro, NFL champion and member of the 1930s all-decade team, Emerson was part of the offensive line that helped produce a then-NFL team record of 2,885 yards rushing in 1936 and that was in a 12-game season. It lasted until 1972 when the Miami Dolphins broke it in a 14-game schedule. The Lions in the 30s at one point had seven or eight shutouts in a row, said Turney. Ox Emerson was playing both ways. He was on that defensive line, and he was also a guard on the offensive line when they rushed for (2,885) yards in a season.--Former Green Bay running back/quarterback/punter Verne Lewellen. In nine seasons with the Albert Pujols Jersey Packers, Lewellen was named to four All-Pro teams, won three NFL titles and was a member of the 1920s all-decade team. More than that, he was one of the greatest all-around backs for the first three decades of the NFL, once led the league in interceptions and was one of its two best punters. Hall-of-Famer Sammy Baugh was the other. When I consulted Packers historian and former Hall-of-Fame voter Cliff Christl, he told me Lewellen is one of a handful of players who deserves to be in the discu sion of greatest Packers ever. He didnt say greatest player not in Canton. He said greatest .According to Turney, all four gained 85 percent or more of the vote, with Dilweg included on every ballot. All four were also included among the 20 finalists named as Centennial Cla s senior finalists.None were chosen Blank Jersey , but, as is readily apparent, all are Hall-of-Fame worthy. If, in fact, the Hall were to celebrate its 60th anniversary with an expanded senior cla s, they would be at the top of the leader board.Thats the same four, said Turney, who were recommended (by the ) six, seven or eight years ago that had one more name on it. That name was Duke Slater, and Duke Slater got in (2020). Those are the four, to me, that are just outstanding that really did get truly left behind. There are just no ifs, ands or buts about it.And that would just clear everything up very quickly. Then the two senior spots could be used anyway the senior committee sees fit going forward, and they wouldnt have to worry about going back to the 1920 s and 30s.Sounds like a plan worth addre sing.

Observations From Seahawks Sixth Trainin

Just as they were one day earlier, the Seahawks werent quite in full pads sporting a helmet and shoulder pads in their sixth training camp practice, but they might as well have been. Much to the delight of offensive line coach Andy Dickerson, Darryl Strawberry Jersey physicality and intensity were taken to a whole other level on Wednesday with the running game taking precedent and players on both sides of the ball levying big hits all afternoon. Another great competitive practice. Coach Pete Carroll sets the tone with the culture here and when we got to the second day of pads, the guys came back fresh and ready to go," Dickerson told reporters after practice. "The competition that we have against each other, we are all a team, but we make the guy acro s from us better. So, the offense makes the defense, special teams better, and the coaches make each other better because we see the different schemes and different things. I thought it was a good day and its not too hot, so Im loving that too. Here's a look at five quick observations from Wednesday's hyper-competitive camp se sion at the VMAC:1. Seattle's offensive line and running backs set the tone all afternoon, punishing the defense with explosives and tough short-yardage conversions.Even without starting guards Gabe Jackson and Damien Lewis as well as projected starting running back Rashaad Penny, who were each sitting out for veteran rest days, the Seahawks didn't mi s a beat establishing their run game. From the outset, after getting worked by the defensive line in Tuesday's practice, a line anchored by reserve guard Phil Haynes and versatile lineman Jake Curhan imposed its will on the opposition and generated consistent push off the line of scrimmage.Taking advantage of the blocking in front of them, Ken Walker III and DeeJay Dallas had big afternoons ripping off several runs of 20-plus yards. On one particular run, Walker cut back behind a well-executed down block by Haynes and then exploded down the sideline working off an excellent block by rookie receiver Dareke Young, who received praise from several teammates and coaches afterward. Later in the practice, the Seahawks transitioned into a situational third and short drill and the offense consistently moved the chains, including on a run by Dallas capped off by a vicious stiff arm against rookie cornerback Josh Valentine-Turner. This carried over into the final no-huddle se sion with Darwin Thompson plunging into the end zone from a yard out.2. Jacob DeGrom Jersey Both Geno Smith and Drew Lock took a step forward, delivering several accurate downfield throws.Throughout camp thus far, Smith and Lock have both struggled to consistently complete downfield throws of 20 or more yards, often failing to put enough air under the ball and allowing corners a chance to recover and make a play. But on Wednesday, each quarterback found greater succe s driving the football down the field, generating more aerial highlights than seen any the previous five practices combined.Throwing with confidence and displaying improved footwork navigating the pocket, even considering he threw his first interception of camp to Michael Jackson, Lock turned in his best day as a pa ser to this point. After rushing for a touchdown during the red zone period, he hooked up with speedy rookie Bo Melton for a 45-yard strike on a vertical route down the right sideline. Later in the practice during a no-huddle drill, he caught several defenders flat-footed with a pump fake and fired a dime to Dallas down the seam for a touchdown. After a slow start, Smith closed out practice on fire in situational third-down work, completing a trio of pa ses for first downs to Tyler Lockett and beating quality coverage from Tariq Woolen for a long completion down the sideline to DK Metcalf.Scroll to Continue3. A rookie pa s rusher continues to surprise, but it may not be the one fans expected.Heading into camp, expectations were high for a number of Seattle's incoming rookies, including athletic second-round pick Boye Mafe. But while the former Minnesota standout registered a pair of pre sures on Wednesday and has made a few plays in the first six practices, fifth-round pick Tyreke Smith has been the first-year rusher raising eyebrows this week.Activated from the PUP list on Monday after mi sing the start of camp with a hip injury, Smith has gotten off to a quick start since returning to the field. In Tuesday's practice, displaying underrated burst and a relentle s motor, he registered a trio of pre sures working against second-year tackle Stone Forsythe and may have had a sack or two in an actual game situation. Picking up where he left off on Wednesday, the ex-Ohio State starter impre sed again beating rookie tackle Charles Cro s around the corner Nolan Ryan Jersey and drawing a whistle for a sack on Geno Smith. With the play continuing after the whistle, the pre sure led to an interception by Woolen that ultimately didn't count.4. As rookie corners receive a wakeup call, Sidney Jones continues to have an outstanding camp.Coby Bryant and Woolen have exceeded all expectations in their first camp, consistently getting their hands on the football with the second-team defense. But with Artie Burns receiving a veteran rest day, both rookies received their first chance to play with the first team on Wednesday and not surprisingly, they were promptly reminded they play on the same team as two of the best receivers in the entire NFL. Putting on a route-running clinic, Lockett reeled in two of his three receptions in the final third down drill with Bryant in coverage, while Metcalf caught a curl for a first down with the rookie on him to close out practice. As for Woolen, while he was in near-perfect coverage running down the sideline, Metcalf skied to high-point a pa s from Smith and came down with both feet inbounds to best the rookie. While Bryant and Woolen received welcome to the league le sons to varying degrees, Jones further demonstrated why he remains the favorite to start at left cornerback. Somewhat quietly, the former Washington star has turned in a fantastic camp, as he intercepted two pa ses in the first three practices and functioned like a no-fly zone in Wednesday's se sion. Particularly effective in the red zone period, he knocked away a pa s from Smith intended for Noah Fant in the end zone and followed up with Lenny Dykstra Jersey another pa s breakup in coverage against Metcalf in the middle of the field. Moments later, he got his hand on the football once more, getting a piece of the ball on a cro sing route by Penny Hart before eventually giving way to the rookies.5. With competitive juices flowing and big hits aplenty, tempers flared in closing minutes. If there's a downside to physicality and intensity being ramped up at a training camp practice, emotions running high can lead to some post-play extracurriculars. Historian Heres Another Take on Most Des

By Andy Piascik I read with great interest the article in this space several weeks ago, and I appreciate the opportunity to weigh in. Before I get to the good stuff, I would like to correct several inaccuracies contained in that article. First, I am a long-time member and former officer of the and there was no PFRA poll or PFRA vote concerning which pre-1963 seniors the PFRA preferred for the Hall of Fame.Rather, an individual posted a question at the PFRA Forum asking for peoples opinions. There are approximately 500 PFRA members and about ten responded to this question, some of whom may not be PFRA members, as many non-members regularly post at the Forum.Second, the PFRA did officially endorse four seniors (or what we referred to as Super Seniors) some years ago. Contrary to what was stated in the article, Verne Lewellen and Ox Emerson were among them. Rather, the four players were Lavvie Dilweg, Duke Slater, Mac Speedie and Al Wistert.Slater and Speedie were both elected to the Hall of Fame two years ago as part of the special Centennial Cla s.Following the theme of the previous article, I am here to mention the four individuals I consider most deserving of the Hall of Fame from the pre-1963 category and two others from more recent years. They are as follows:DICK BARWEGANAt the top of my list as the Senior most deserving of enshrinement is a pre-1963 guard, Dick Barwegan. Barwegan began his career in 1947 Giancarlo Stanton Jersey with the New York Yankees of the All-America Football Conference and played both ways his first few years. At the time, he was hailed as an outstanding defensive player. It was on offense, however, that Barwegan really made his mark. He relied on strength, a powerful drive, quickne s and great technique and was named by sportswriters as a first team All-Pro (that is, as a first teamer on the combined all-AAFC/ NFL team) as well as to all of the all-AAFC teams in his rookie season. That established a pattern. After the AAFC transferred him to the Baltimore Colts to strengthen one of its weaker teams, Barwegan was a first-team selection on all of the combined Alex Rodriguez Jersey AAFC/NFL teams in 1948 and 1949, as well as on all of the all-AAFC teams selected. Traded to the Chicago Bears, Barwegan was named first-team on every single All-Pro unit in 1950-51, joining Bulldog Turner and Ray Bray on one of the best offensive lines of the era. He was a second team All-Pro in 1952 and first-team again for the sixth time in his career in 1953.He was named a starter in all of the first four Pro Bowls (1950-53) and concluded his career in Canada with the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1955 after jumping for a significantly higher salary. In a 2005 interview, Hall-of-Famer Dick Stanfel said Barwegan was the gold standard of guards of that era. In addition to Barwegan's sterling credentials (named to the combined all-AAFC/NFL first-team in his first three seasons and first-team All-Pro six times altogether) the delayed start to his career, largely because of military service, should also be weighed in his favor. He was 25 years-and-nine-months old when he played his first pro game and 33 when he played his last after eight seasons. The delay to the start of his career due to military obligations notwithstanding, I believe Dick Barwegan is the one senior candidate most deserving of enshrinement in Canton. Lavvie Dilwegs Hall-of-Fame credentials were discu sed at length in this space several weeks ago and so will not be repeated. Dilwegs case seems to suffer from bad timing, as he immediately preceded the immortal Don Hutson at the same position in Green Bay.Scroll to Continue Two more pre-1963 seniors who are among the handful of best candidates played the same position in almost the same years -- tackles Al Wistert and Lou Rymkus.Like Dilweg, Wisterts case was discu sed at some length in the previous article. The only thing I can see that may hurt Wistert in the eyes of voters is that two of the seasons when he was All-Pro were 1944 and 1945 when talent was very seriously depleted by World War II. This is not to say Wistert wouldnt have been All-Pro had all players in the military played football. However, one need only look at the number of rather obscure players who Wade Boggs Jersey made All-Pro during those years, especially 1945, to see why there may be some doubts.LOU RYMKUS Like Wistert and Barwegan, Rymkus was a standout two-way player for the first portion of his career and someone who made his biggest impact on the offensive line. And, like Barwegan (and unlike Wistert), he lost prime years of his career to military service in 1944 and 1945. Bigger than most linemen of that era, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Rymkus was named first-team on one of the All-Pro teams as a rookie with Washington in 1943. He was widely hailed as one of the best pa s blockers of his time and had the speed, quickne s and technique to pull on sweeps to the far side. After returning from the military, Rymus had six outstanding seasons for the Browns with lots of All-Pro honors. Cleveland finished first in all six of those seasons while winning five championships. One last factor that should count in Rymkus favor, regardle s of any dichotomy that exists with Hall-of-Fame voters where a candidate is considered as either a player or coach ... but not both ... is his guiding the Houston Oilers to the 1960 championship as head coach in the first season of the AFL. That turned out to be his only full year as a head coach. He was fired after a slow start in 1961 and never served as the top man again. Two players who stand out from all others from more recent years as most deserving of enshrinement are Randy Gradishar and Jim Ray Smith. Like Dilweg and Wistert, Gradishar was inexplicably bypa sed by the Centennial Committee in 2020. He also remains on the outside looking in despite the recent election of numerous players from the 1970s, David Robertson Jersey including some le s deserving. Gradishar made a number of All-Pro teams and seven Pro Bowls in his career. He was named the NFLs Defensive Player of the Year by the and in 1978 and Linebacker of the Year by in both 1978 and 1979. He was a standout of Denvers Orange Crush with a nose for the football as both a middle linebacker in the 4-3 and as an inside backer in the 3-4. Considering the run of succe s Denver had during Gradishars peak years from 1976-81 (9-5, 12-2, 10-6, 10-6, 8-8 and 10-6 with two division titles and an AFC championship), its surprising that not one Bronco from those years is in the Hall of Fame. Gradishar was Denvers best player of that era and deserving of enshrinement.JIM RAY SMITH Jim Ray Smith was the best guard of his era and is a criminally overlooked great player. He was a five-time first team All-Pro and named all-conference six straight years. In addition to Barwegan’s sterling credentials (named to the combined all-AAFC/NFL first-team in his first three seasons and first-team All-Pro six times altogether) the delayed start to his career, largely because of military service, should also be weighed in his favor. Dilwegs case seems to suffer from bad timing, as he immediately preceded the immortal Don Hutson at the same position in Green Bay.Scroll to Continue Two more pre-1963 seniors who are among the handful of best candidates played the same position in almost the same years — tackles Al Wistert and Lou Rymkus.Like Dilweg, Wisterts case was discu sed at some length in the previous article. The only thing I can see that may hurt Wistert in the eyes of voters is that two of the seasons when he was All-Pro were 1944 and 1945 when talent was very seriously depleted by World War II. This is not to say Wistert wouldnt have been All-Pro had all players in the military played football. Jets OT Mekhi Becton Likely Out For 2022

The Jets were after Mekhi Becton limped off the practice field on Monday with an apparent knee injury. After some additional testing, that worst-case scenario has arrived.Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed to reporters on Tuesday morning that Becton's season is likely over due to his new right knee injury.Saleh added that Becton suffered a fracture in his kneecap. He'll have an additional evaluation on his surgically-repaired right knee on Wednesday, Saleh said. This news is devastating for both Milwaukee Brewers Jersey Becton and the Jets. For New York, the Jets are losing one of their starting tackles once again. Becton is a former first-round pick, an a set that was poised to be a key building block for this franchise. He was going to start at right tackle this year, protecting quarterback Zach Wilson, a crucial component in helping New York' Eric Sogard Jersey s second-year quarterback bring the best out of this offense, a group that's added a slew of weapons over the last few years.Scroll to ContinueWith Becton out, Gang Green is in a tough spot. It's clear they need to add a tackle that's capable of starting at this level. is still available in free agency and recently visited with New York during training camp. Internally, New York will move forward with backups Chuma Edoga, Conor McDermott (who is out for the next few weeks with an ankle sprain) and rookie Max Mitchell.Meanwhile, this is a huge blow for Josh Hader Jersey Becton, adding fuel to the preexisting narrative that he's unable to stay on the field. After his promising rookie year in 2020, the former No. 11 pick suffered a season-ending knee injury in Orlando Arcia Jersey Week 1 against Carolina, the beginning of a long road to recovery with heaps of criticism over his weight. Now, the future for Becton is uncertain. Back-to-back lost seasons will cast a dark shadow over any of Becton's potential moving forward, forcing general manager Joe Douglas to consider moving on."We love Mekhi. His ride is not over," Saleh told reporters on Tuesday.MORE:
