Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. reportedly agr

Position players don't report to Padres spring training for a few more days (Feb. 21 to be exact), but when Fernando Tatis Jr. walks into the clubhouse, don't be surprised if he has a bit more spring to his step.

According to multiple reports, the 22-year-old shortstop and his club have agreed to a 14-year, $340 million deal. Yes, you read that correctly: He'll have a contract to be a Padre till he's the ripe old age of 36 and will be Charles Haley Jerseys quite wealthy by that point. Tatis inked a deal that is not only the longest in MLB history but also the largest contract awarded to a player not yet eligible for arbitration; he would have been arbitration-eligible in 2022 and a free agent three years later.

The contract puts him behind the Dodgers' Mookie Betts ($365 million for 12 years) and the Angels' Mike Trout ($360 million for 10 years) in total value.

Must be something in the California water.

Betts and Trout, however, signed their deals when they were already established as sure-fire major leaguers. This is a rich contract for a guy who has only played 143 games over two seasons (neither season was a full year ) with a batting average of .301 and .956 OPS Trey Sermon Jerseys (that OPS is just shy of Lou Gehrig's numbers through 143 games and 10 points higher than Mike Trout, ). Tatis did finish third in the National League's Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 and fourth in theMVP race last year. He also collected a Silver Slugger award in 2020 and hit .318 in two postseason rounds.

While Tatis definitely deserved a contract extension, the reaction to the eye-popping length and number was all Twitter could talk about.

What gets me most about Tatis' $340M extension is how young he is. He turned 22 a month ago. Mike Trout signed his megadeal at 27. Same with Mookie Betts. For the Padres to commit this before Tatis even reached arbitration is staggering. With no-trade clause, a true commitment.

Cal Ripken Jr. was one of the best baseball players of all time, and remains one of the game's most recognizable faces, so it came as no surprise when the Nationals showed interested in hiring him as their manager in 2013.

Washington ultimately chose current managerMatt Williams, but just how close did Ripken come Jackrabbit Jenkins Jerseys to actually joining the team?

SPECTOR:

We had some serious discu sions about it and never really got down to the point of choice and those sorts of things, . Bobby Hart Jerseys I think the Mike Rizzo's done a fantastic job. I like how he thinks, I like how he talks. If youre looking at a potential position, who wouldnt want their first managing job with a team built the way it was built?

"It was interesting discu sions. With many things in life, its about timing, and so you have other considerations. I would say timing was an i sue there, but it was fun talking about it.

For his part, before Williams was hired that he Chance Campbell Jerseys had talked with Ripken, but didn't characterize it as an interview. He said he and Ripken "mutually agreed" it wasn't the right time for the Hall of Famer to step into that kind of role.

Ripken has since been frequently asked about potentially managing a MLB team, and he still seems open to the idea.

Im always better off saying Im happy doing what Im doing right now and then it puts an end to all the conversation, Ripken said. Its been interesting where theres been some interest and some talks, and quite frankly the juices get flowing when you start to think about the prospects of it, because its what I know.

"I dont know whether theres some hope. Ill be 55 this month. If you look at the stages of your life, thats not old by any standards, so theres an opening for a lot of things left in my life and maybe that Kristian Fulton Jerseys s one of them.

Bottom of the ninth

12:45 a.m.: Harper strikes out swinging on a nasty curve from Wade Davis. Ballgame. Cubs win 9-8 and advance to the NLCS to take on the Dodgers. Davis gets a seven-out save.

12:41 a.m.: Werth strikes out swinging. Nats down to their last out. It'll be Bryce Harper as the last hope. This is who Nats fans want up.

12:38 a.m.: Turner flies out to center. Two outs left for the Nats, down by one.

*****

Top of the ninth (Cubs 9, Nationals 8)

12:32 a.m.: Martin lines out to Werth in left. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Certainly this game has some more drama left, right?

12:30 a.m.: Baez goes down swinging on a super-high pitch.

12:29 a.m.: Heyward strikes out swinging.

Sean Doolittle on the mound for the Nats.

*****

Bottom of the eighth (Cubs 9, Nationals 8)

12:22 a.m.: Cubs attempt to pick off Lobaton at first. Bang-bang play. Looks like his foot might have come off the bag while tag was still on. Cubs reviewing. This will bea huge, huge call. Aaaaaand, he's out. Wow. Huge. That ends the threat in a hurry. On to the ninth.

I'm generally in favor of replay, but I feel a little cheated having a rally ended on a Teair Tart Jerseys off-the-bag-for-a-split-second thing.

Jason Foster (@ByJasonFoster)

Willys always watching!

MLB (@MLB)

12:19 a.m.: Lobaton lines a single up the middle. Taylor to second. Tying run at second. Once again, I ask you to hold on to your bottom.

12:15 a.m.: Taylor singles into center to score Murphy from third. He's had a great couple of days. Meanwhile, it's a one-run game. Because of course it is.9-8 Cubs.

Michael Taylor: 1st player in postseason history to have consecutive games with at least 4 RBI

ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo)

12:13 a.m.: Home plate ump Jerry Layne gets shaken up on a pitch that hits him directly in the mask. Looks like Contreras migth have beencro sed up.

12:12 a.m.: Adam Lind, pinch-hitting for Madson, grounds into a 4-6-3 double play on the first pitch. Welp. That certainly changes things. Murphy moves to third, though.

12:10 a.m.: Rendonwalks, too. Tying runs on. Gotta love what you're watching, baseball fans.

12:06 a.m.: Murphy walks to lead off. Tying run up again. Man, this game.

*****

Top of the eighth (Cubs 9, Nationals 7)

12:01 a.m. (Good morning!): Ru sell strikes out swinging, but the ball gets away from Lobaton, who has to throw to first for the out. Hey, look at that! A 1-2-3 inning!

11:59 p.m.: Zobrist grounds out hard to Zimmerman at first for the ol' "3-U."

11:57 p.m.: Contreras chops one off the plate to Madson, who throws to first in time for the out.

*****

Bottom of the seventh (Cubs 9, Nationals 7)

11:52 p.m.: Davis fans Zimmerman, who looked bad on a weak swinging strike three. No way we're done with the scoring in this game.

11:46 p.m.: Harper lines out to right-center for a sac fly. He just mi sed it. Still, Taylor scores from third. 9-7 Cubs. That's all for Quintana. In comes Wade Davis, the closer. Leonys Martincomes in to play center for Jay.

11:44 p.m.: Werth walks. Bases are loaded for Harper. Again, hold on to your butts.

11:39 p.m.: Trea Turner singles through the right side to move Taylor to second with one out. Another rally brewing. Tying run at the plate.

11:38 p.m.: Jose Lobaton goes after the first pitch and pops out to Heyward in shallow right. Zero patience from Lobaton there.

11:33 p.m.: Michael A. Taylor walks to lead off. Here we go again(?). That's it for Edwards Jr., who threw five pitches. Ouch. Starter Jose Quintana is coming in. It's getting serious now.

Carl Edwards Jr. on to pitch for the Cubs.

*****

Top of the seventh (Cubs 9, Nationals 6)

11:27 p.m.: Rizzo grounds out to Murphy, who was playing in shallow right.

11:22 p.m.: Bryant grounds to Rendon at third, who tries to start a 5-4-3 double play, but Bryant beats the wrap at first. Schwarber scores. 9-6 Cubs. Nats are challenging the takeout slide at second. Umps rule the slide was clean/legal. Crowd boos, of course.

When Lou Brock played baseball, you learned to avoid the slide at second base or you didn't play second base for long.

Richard M. Nixon (@dick_nixon)

11:17 p.m.: Jon Jay singles up the middle to send Schwarber to third. Now it's the Cubs who are rallying. The Nats' bullpen hasn't done them any favors tonight. Speaking of the 'pen, Dusty Baker is making a double switch. Ryan Madson comes on to pitch with one out. Jose Lobaton comes in to catch.

11:14: Kyle Schwarber, pinch-hitting for Montgomery, hits one of the top of the right-field wall for a ... single. That was hit, like, really hard. He hit it too hard, actually. Had to settle for one base.

11:12 p.m.: Baez grounds weakly to Zimmerman, who tags him out.

Let's do this. Game 5 of the NLDS between the Cubs and Nationals from Washington. The winner advances to the NLCS to face the Dodgers. The loser goes home for the winter.

The Cubs have a championship to defend, while the Nationals are looking for the franchise's first playoff series win since moving to Washington in 2005.

This will be one of those all-hands-on-deck games everyone's available, so things could get interesting. I'll be your host tonight, giving you updates and commentary, along with some gifts to help keep things light.

If you want some light pre-game reading checking out this column I wrote today on the win and how hardly anyone seems to remember it. That series was the now-Washington franchise's first and only, so far postseason series win.

Let's have some fun.

I’m generally in favor of replay, but I feel a little cheated having a rally ended on a Teair Tart Jerseys off-the-bag-for-a-split-second thing.

Let’s do this. Game 5 of the NLDS between the Cubs and Nationals from Washington. The winner advances to the NLCS to face the Dodgers. The loser goes home for the winter.

The Cubs have a championship to defend, while the Nationals are looking for the franchise’s first playoff series win since moving to Washington in 2005.

This will be one of those all-hands-on-deck games everyone’s available, so things could get interesting. I’ll be your host tonight, giving you updates and commentary, along with some gifts to help keep things light.

If you want some light pre-game reading checking out this column I wrote today on the win and how hardly anyone seems to remember it. That series was the now-Washington franchise’s first and only, so far postseason series win.

Let’s have some fun.

Cardinals trade left-hander Jaime Garcia

The Cardinals made an effort to get younger Thursday by trading left-hander Jaime Garcia to the Braves for three prospects. The teams announced the deal Thursday evening.

Cameron Heyward Jerseys St. Louis received right-hander John Gant, infielderLuke Dykstra and pitcher Chris Ellis.Gant, 24, made 20 appearances (seven starts) for the Braves last season, posting a 4.86 ERA in 50 innings. He averaged 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

MORE:

Garcia Mitchell Trubisky Jerseys , 30, was terrific in 2015, posting a 10-6 record with a sterling 2.43 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Though he regre sed last season 10-13 with a 4.67 ERA Garcia, when healthy, can be a quality mid-rotation starter for the quickly improving Braves, who earlier this offseason signed veteran free agents Bartolo Colon and R.A. Dickey.

Atlanta is rumored to be interested in White Sox ace Chris Sale as well. While this deal doesn't rule Anthony Miller Jerseys out a move for Sale, it certainly hurt their chances after losing three trade-worthy prospects.

MORE:

The Braves are also interested in free-agent third baseman Justin Turner, who had a breakout season with the Dodgers this year.

Clearly this franchise Jerome Bettis Jerseys has moved on from its prospect-hoarding philosophy to sign and trade forplayers who can help them win now.
